Possible root cause of colon pain
Constipation
- Constipation can be ruled in when a person experienced less than three bowel movements in a week. The primary cause for constipation is the slow movement of stools along the colon. This is due to the following causes:
- Eating foods with low amount of fiber
- Intake of medications that includes overuse of laxatives
- Meager bowel routine
- Other diseases which includes some hormonal imbalances
- When a person is constipated, he/she may feel the following:
- Colon pain
- Abdominal cramps
- Rectal bleeding
- Nausea and vomiting
- Constipation can prevented by doing the following:
- Eating foods that is rich in fiber such as whole wheat breads and fruits and vegetables
- Increase oral fluid intake. Drink at least eight to ten glasses of water daily.
- Use stool softeners and other laxatives
- Enemas can also be done
Heartburn
- Heartburn can also be another source for colon pain. Alcohol, some foods and spices as well as some medications can cause heartburn.
- Other than colon pain, the following are the common signs and symptoms for heartburn:
- Regurgitation
- Burning sensation on the part of the chest wall
- Dysphagia ( difficulty of swallowing )
- Chronic cough
- Asthma-like symptoms
- Smoldering sensation in the throat area
- To prevent heartburn that causes colon pain, the following tips should be considered:
- Eat small, frequent feedings
- Do not wear tight belts while you are eating
- When you are about to sleep, make sure that your head is slightly elevated
- Avoid food and drinks that can stimulate acid reflux such as foods with too much seasonings, fatty foods, colas and caffeinated drinks
- Maintain your weight on the normal range
- Do not smoke
- Avoid alcoholic beverages
Ulcerative colitis
- Colon pain can be brought by ulcerative colitis. In this condition, the lining of the large colon is being inflamed.
- A person with ulcerative colitis have the following signs and symptoms:
- Colon pain
- Rectal bleeding
- Diarrhea
- Blood in the stool
- Abdominal cramping
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Sudden loss of weight
- Anemia
- Prevention for ulcerative colitis:
- Eat high-fiber rich foods
- Drink for at least eight to ten glasses daily
- Avoid taking some medications such as paracetamol and antibiotics on an empty stomach
- Avoid too much stress. Do physical exercises and relaxation techniques
- Have enough to rest and sleep
Cancer of the colon
- This happens when there is an undifferentiated/abnormal cell.
- The common signs and symptoms for colon cancer are the following:
- Colon pain/discomfort
- Unexplained loss of weight
- Blood in the stool
- Rectal bleeding
- Narrow stools
- Changes in bowel movement
- Nausea and/or vomiting
- Easy fatigability
- Prevention:
- Eat nutritious and balanced diet
- Increase intake of water daily
- Perform healthy lifestyle activities
- Maintain normal weight
- Avoid smoking
Colon pain is manageable as long as we know the root cause for it. In able to come up with the right diagnosis, we have to consult a medical specialist. We should avoid self-medicating.
